Getting Started with Medicare Enrolment
Enrolling in Medicare is one of the most important steps you can take to protect your health in Australia. Whether you're a new citizen, a permanent resident, or someone newly eligible through a reciprocal health care agreement, the process is straightforward once you know what's required.
What You'll Need Before You Apply
Before starting your application, gather the following documents:
- Proof of identity: Australian passport, birth certificate, or ImmiCard
- Proof of residency status: Visa grant letter or citizenship certificate
- Your myGov account login (or be prepared to create one)
- A bank account for direct deposit of any rebates (optional at enrolment)
Step 1: Create or Log In to myGov
Most Medicare enrolments are handled online through myGov (my.gov.au). If you don't already have an account, you'll need to create one using a valid email address. Once created, link your Medicare account to myGov for easy ongoing access.
Step 2: Complete the Enrolment Form
Within myGov, navigate to the Medicare section and select "Enrol in Medicare." You'll be asked to provide:
- Your full legal name and date of birth
- Your current residential address in Australia
- Proof of your eligibility (citizenship or visa details)
- Contact information including phone number and email
Step 3: Submit Your Supporting Documents
You may be required to upload scanned copies of your identity documents directly through myGov, or in some cases, present them at a Services Australia service centre. Check the on-screen instructions for your specific situation.
Step 4: Wait for Your Medicare Card
After your application is processed — which typically takes a few weeks — your Medicare card will be mailed to your registered address. You'll also be able to access a digital copy of your card through the Medicare app or myGov portal.
Can You Apply In Person?
Yes. If you prefer not to apply online, you can visit a Services Australia service centre with your original documents. Staff can process your application in person. This is also the recommended path for people who have difficulty using online services.
Updating Your Details
Once enrolled, it's important to keep your details current. You can update your address, bank account, and name through myGov or by calling Services Australia. Keeping your information up to date ensures your rebates and correspondence reach you without delay.
Key Tips
- Apply as soon as you become eligible — Medicare is not automatically assigned to new citizens or residents.
- Keep a digital copy of your Medicare card in the Medicare app for convenience.
- If you're replacing a lost card, this can be done quickly through myGov without re-enrolling.
Medicare enrolment is free and there are no ongoing premiums for basic Medicare coverage. Once you're enrolled, you'll have access to subsidised GP visits, specialist referrals, and public hospital services across Australia.
